Dermal fillers are gel-like substances made from hyaluronan- a complex chain of carbohydrates, and a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. Hyaluronan or commonly known as hyaluronic acid is responsible for keeping our skin hydrated, plump and youthful looking. As we age the quantities of Hyaluronan diminish, causing fine lines, textural changes, elasticity and volume loss. Dermal fillers are used to naturally re-volumize and hydrate skin. Different formulations are used for different areas to provide soft correction of hollows or areas of shadowing, sharpen jawlines and chins, soften fine lines, lift cheeks and enhance lips. I stock several brands of FDA approved dermal fillers, and do not split or decant syringes as this can compromise safety. At Louise Highet Aesthetics, I use only Hyaluranon based fillers as they are safe and biodegradable. Results are seen immediately and last 1- 2 years depending on the area treated and the formula used. Treatments take around 60-90 minutes, and are well tolerated, the injectable gels contain pain-reducing lidocaine, and other measures can also be used to minimise discomfort.

Fine lines will soften as they’re physically plumped by your skin, as it reabsorbs the moisture it has lost over time, it is just like giving your skin a huge drink of water! Hyaluronic acid is an absorbable molecule, meaning the effects are temporary and depend on several factors: skin type, age, lifestyle, treated area, injection technique. For an optimal result, an initial protocol of 3 sessions at 3-4 week intervals, and maintenance treatments every 6- 12 months is required.

Belkyra® is the only FDA approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of mild to moderate fullness of the chin, and to contour jawline. Whether your double chin is a result of weight gain, genetics or ageing, often sub-mental fullness cannot be removed with diet or exercise. Belkyra works by dissolving the outer layer of the fat cells, releasing the fat, which is then removed by the bodies repair systems and excreted. Belkyra® consists of a synthetic form of Deoxycholic Acid, that mimics the naturally occurring Deoxycholic Acid found within the body (a form of bile acid found in the intestine that breaks up fat).

Treatment duration is around 60 minutes, a series of injections are placed in the carefully marked area, comfort is increased with the use of ice and injected local anaesthetic. Swelling and inflammation is an expected outcome post treatment, this is visible immediately, and will continue to increase over the following few days. Swelling can remain for up to 14 days post treatment. Swelling in the area is actually a good thing, it is a sign the treatment is working, and the more inflammation present, the more the bodies healing processes are stimulated.

The average number of treatments required is 2-6 depending on the degree of sub-mental fullness and desired outcomes. You will not receive a result from one treatment, and your first treatment purchase includes 2 treatments that are recommended to be performed at 6-8 week intervals. Results are typically seen 4-8 weeks after the second treatment. The cost of Belkyra is $2500, this is for 2 treatments, which is the minimum number of treatments required, subsequent treatments cost $1400.

The most common side effects associated with Belkyra® include: pain at the injection site, swelling, bruising, numbness, redness, tingling, formation of small areas of hardness, warmth and discolouration, and itching around the treatment area. After treatment you can typically return to your normal day, however it is recommended to avoid excessive exercise, make up application and excessive alcohol, most clients opt to go home to relax after this treatment. An initial consultation is required to determine suitability, and to discuss further possible risks and side effects. Pregnant and breast feeding women are not suitable for Belkyra® treatment.

What is the MORPHEUS8TM?

MORPHEUS8TM is a handheld radio frequency (RF) micro-needling device for skin rejuvenation and tissue remodeling. The minimally invasive treatment combines RF energy with micro-needling to penetrate heat into deeper levels of the dermis. How does the MORPHEUS8TM work?

What happens at the appointment?

Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to reduce pain, however, it is normal to feel some pressure and discomfort. After the area is numbed, the handpiece is applied to the skin, and the needles are delivered into the skin at the programmed depth and energy. Treatment lasts approximately 30- 60 minutes depending on the size of the treated area.

What can be expected after the treatment?

After the treatment, redness, and swelling are common in the initial 24-48 hours, with some patients occasionally experiencing bruising. Crusting of the skin 24-48 hours after treatment is also normal and usually clears up within the first week of treatment. A post-procedural regimen tailored to the condition of your skin will be provided to optimise the recovery of the skin.

In the days following treatment, clients notice improved skin tone and texture however significant results are usually seen around 3 months as this is the time it takes for new collagen and elastin to be produced.

How many sessions are required?

The majority of patients require three to five sessions to reach treatment goals, spaced at four to six-week intervals. Your treatment plan will be discussed at your initial consult and results may vary depending on skin type and severity of damage being treated.

The Lumecca™ IPL treatment is a powerful and effective treatment in reducing and removing hyperpigmentation and vascular lesions in the skin, from redness, rosacea and spider veins. To sun spots, freckling, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (for example, post-acne) and sun damage pigmentation.

LUMECCA™ can be used on all areas of the body and is suitable for all skin types. The most common treatment zones are areas regularly exposed to the sun. This includes face, neck, décolletage, legs, hands and arms.

How does the LUMECCA™ work?

Using selective photothermolysis, the LUMECCA™IPL laser delivers specific wavelengths of light which interact with red and brown pigments in the skin. Pigment in the skin absorbs these light pulses which cause them to break up and fade over time. The creation of microthermal damage in the dermis results in increased collagen production and elastin, providing patients with total skin rejuvenation.

What happens at the appointment?

Ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area and the eyes will be protected with goggles. A mild anaesthetic is offered but not necessary. During the treatment, there will be bright flashes of light and a sensation that feels like a light elastic band against the surface of the skin. Treatment lasts around ten minutes and you will notice the skin feels slightly ‘sunburnt’ afterwards.

What can be expected after the treatment?

For the majority of patients, redness and heat following LUMECCA™IPL usually subside the day after treatment. Local inflammation around pigmented and vascular lesions in the form of mild swelling and bruising can be expected for a few days. Pigmented lesions appear darker than usual over a period of 1-2 weeks before lightening. After treating vascular lesions, you may see the vein blanch and disappear or a colour change in the vessel which dissipates after a few days. Final results are usually evident by day 10-14 and new collagen production will continue for up to 2 months after the procedure.

As we age, areas of fat shift and deflate, and the face’s bone structure slowly starts to reabsorb and hollow out. Acne can dramatically affect your self-confidence, it can strike us at varying stages of life and is not only embarrassing, and uncomfortable, but it can also result in scarring and textural changes.

Acne can occur for a multitude of reasons, from medication, hormones, stress, gut health, ineffective skincare regimen, lifestyle, and genetics.

During your Skin Consultation, a thorough skin assessment will be taken, and recommendations will be made to assist in the improvement of your acne through medical-grade skincare, nutritional support/supplements, lifestyle/skin practice recommendations, and in-clinic treatments such as combined LED & clinical peels, micro-needling, and Platelet-Rich Plasma.

Acne scarring can be either depressed or raised. These present in three main types, boxcar, icepick, rolling and combinations of the three, along with post acne redness/inflammation, and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Most acne scar treatments attempt to either remove or replace abnormal tissue, to stimulate new collagen formation to fill in the old scars. We favor Dermapen 4 micro needling with scar-specific technology, and Morpheus 8 for acne scarring,

Stretch Marks new or old, a large percentage of women, and men experience stretch marks somewhere on our bodies. Whether it be from weight gain, hormonal changes, pregnancy or genetics. Coupled with this can come laxity or loss of collagen & elastin, often in sites such as the upper arms, abdomen, buttocks and legs. Morpheus 8 provides impressive results through stimulating the body’s natural healing response, prompting the production of collagen and elastin. Most commonly the mid face & temples are addressed first, as these areas quickly and directly affect the tissues in the lower face. Radiesse biostimulant dermal filler can also be used in certain areas (including necks & hands) to rapidly stimulate collagen to grow in the area injected, to then replace the dermal filler with your own natural collagen, great for thinning or crepe-like skin.

Botox® /Dysport® have been safely used for the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) for many years with a very high success rate. The treatment is relatively quick, and virtually pain free, Treatment is administered through a very fine needle into the affected skin, with results seen within 2 weeks, lasting 6-12 months, or longer with repeat treatments. It is important to note that complete cessation of sweating is not the ideal outcome, but to reduce the excessive sweating down to a more tolerable level for the client. I offer three FDA approved products and will discuss your options with you during consultation.

Hyperhidrosis can affect both men and women, and can be an embarrassing condition to live with, affecting confidence, clothing choice, social interactions and can become both expensive and frustrating. The main complaint tends to be excessive sweating under the arms. This is often a concern as clothing becomes damp, stained and must be changed several times a day and can cause chafing, irritant dermatitis and infection.

Hyperhidrosis is caused by overactivity of sweat glands in the skin. The glands exist in various concentrations throughout the skin. Sweat glands function to maintain body temperature within a narrow range in the face of external heat or increase in physical activity. Sweat evaporates on the surface of the skin and transfers heat, primarily by direct conduction of heat from the vascular supply to the skin surface. In hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) although the glands themselves are normal, there is an abnormal neurologic response to stimuli in the hypothalamic sweat centres in the brain which produces an excessive amount of sweating. Anxiety or stress as well as heat or exercise stimulates sympathetic nerves to release acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter (nerve messenger) that then stimulates the muscle around the sweat glands to contract. Contraction of the sweat gland causes sweat to release. This is where Botox® /Dysport® come into action- it blocks the message from the Acetylcholine getting through to the muscle. The muscle will not contract if the message is not received, therefore, the sweat gland will not be triggered!

Hyperhidrosis can be classified as primary or secondary, primary is not due to any underlying medical conditions, can be easily treated, and is the most common cause of hyperhidrosis. Secondary is often associated with underlying physiological changes such as endocrine and metabolic disorders, conditions affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory system and many other conditions. These conditions need to be identified and treated, but symptoms can be helped with Botox® /Dysport® There are other hyperhidrosis treatments available, including surgical intervention, however these do come with a much higher risk of side-effects.
